PRESBYTERY OF HAMILTON

 

 

IXX      MOTHERWELL: 2ND NOVEMBER, 2004

At MOTHERWELL: DALZIEL ST. ANDREW`S PARISH CHURCH HALLS on the Second Day of November, Two Thousand and Four years, on which day the PRESBYTERY OF HAMILTON met and was constituted in prayer.

 

            The Clerk moved that the Rev. Arthur P. Barrie be appointed as Moderator pro die.   It was seconded and agreed.

123.     SEDERUNT

            The Rev. Arthur P. Barrie, Moderator, the Rev. Shaw J. Paterson, Clerk and others as per signed lists in retentis (Total – 49 Ministers; 1 Deacons: 81 Elders)

           

124.     CONGRATULATIONS

The Moderator offered the congratulations of the Court to the Rev. Dr. J. S.  Salmond and the Rev. Sheila M. Spence on the 25th anniversary of their ordination.

 

125.     MINUTES

            The Minutes of Meetings XVI and XVI I (2004) were read and approved.

 

126.     INTIMATIONS

            Intimations were made.

                                              

127.     CO-ORDINATING COMMITTEE

The Presbytery called for the report of the Co-ordinating Committee which was given in by the Rev. Norman B. McKee, Vice-Convener.

 

It was moved, seconded and agreed:

           

1.         The Presbytery receives the report.

2.         The Presbytery grants the Rev. Allan Brown, Chaplain to HM Prison Shotts, leave of absence for a period of 15 months in the first instance to attend a course on Introduction to Counselling and COSCA Counselling Courses, encouraging him so far as his course permits, to attend some meetings of Presbytery.

3.         The Presbytery notes a complaint against a Minister and appoints a Sub-Committee to investigate the complaint, the Sub-Committee comprising of the Rev. Arthur P. Barrie (Convener), Rev. Agnes A. Moore and Mrs. Alison Macauslane.

4.         The Presbytery appoints a Sub-Committee to examine the Overture under the Barrier Act in relation to Act III (2001) and to report to the December meeting, the Sub-Committee comprising of the Presbytery Clerk, the Depute Clerk and the Convener of the Co-ordinating Committee.

ADDENDUM

            The Presbytery agrees to transfer the membership of the Rev. Ian C. Wotherspoon from the Presbytery of Hamilton to the Presbytery of St. Andrew`s.

 

128.     MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

            The Presbytery called for the report of the Ministry Development Committee which was given in by the Rev. Michael G. Lyall, Convener.

 

It was moved, seconded and agreed:

 

1.         The Presbytery receives the report.

2.         The Presbytery notes receipt of the following Study Leave applications

-          Rev. David Burt (Hamilton: Hillhouse) Course at the Vancouver School of Theology from 23rd June to 23rd July, 2005.

-          Rev. John Fairful (Bargeddie) To attend Shepherd’s Conference at Grace Community Church, Los Angeles from 22nd February to 10th March, 2005.

-          Rev. John McPake (East Kilbride: Mossneuk) Supervised Post-Doctoral Research from 8th August to 16th October, 2005.

3.         The Presbytery notes receipt of Study Leave reports from

-          Rev. Bruce McDowall (Uddingston: Park) –  The Footsteps of St. Paul, from 13th March to 10th April, 2004

-          Rev. Kenneth Mayne (East Kilbride: West) – lectures and seminars at Princeton Theological Seminary from 14th June to 11th July, 2004.

-          Rev. John Brewster (East Kilbride: Greenhills) – lectures and seminars at the Joint Institute of Theology at Princeton University from 19th June to 2nd July, 2004.

 

129.     PARISH DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

The Presbytery called for the report of the Parish Development Committee which was given in by the Rev. Klaus O. Buwert, Convener.

 

            It was moved, seconded and agreed:

 

1.         The Presbytery receives the report.

2.         The Presbytery receives the report from the Ministry Team at East Kilbride: Moncreiff and commends the Rev. Alastair Lusk and Susan Reford to the prayers of the Presbytery as they seek to meet the challenges of the parish and develop the work of the church.

3.         The Presbytery supports the Machan Trust as it seeks further funding to enable it to meet the increasing demands on its services among young people.

 

130.     PARISH PLANNING COMMITTEE

The Presbytery called for the report of the Parish Planning Committee which was given in by Mr. David Alexander, Convener.

 

            It was moved, seconded and agreed:

 

1.         The Presbytery receives the report.

2.                  The Presbytery resolves to grant permission to the congregation of Chapelhall to call a Minister under Reviewable Tenure for a period of 5 years, subject to the concurrence of the General Assembly`s Parish Appraisal Committee, and encourages the congregation to use the period before the review to develop their work and mission in the new housing developments in Chapelhall.

3.         AIRDRIE: NEW MONKLAND

            The Presbytery approves the request by Airdrie: New Monkland to have the Engineering Consultant’s professional fee, totalling £3,377.36 including VAT for works in connection with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 paid out of funds held on the congregation’s behalf by the General Trustees.

4.         AIRDRIE: FLOWERHILL

            The Presbytery approves the request by Airdrie: Flowerhill to have the manse occupied during the vacancy on a caretaker basis.

 

131.     CHURCH AND SOCIAL INTERESTS

            The Presbytery called for the report of the Church and Social Interest Committee which was given in by Mr. D. M. Gray, Convener.

 

            It was moved, seconded and agreed :

 

1.         The Presbytery notes that the Rev. Klaus O. F. Buwert has intimated, because of the union between Wishaw: Chalmers and Wishaw: Thornlie Churches, he wishes to relinquish his Chaplaincy at Wishaw General Hospital. 

            The Presbytery thanks Mr. Buwert for his service as Chaplain at Wishaw General Hospital

2.         The Presbytery agrees to the nomination of the Rev. Kay Gilchrist as part-time Chaplain at Wishaw General Hospital (2 sessions per week).

3.         The Presbytery receives the Reports from the part-time Hospital Chaplains and notes the contents;  thanks them for taking posts as chaplains in Healthcare and for the service they provide to patients, families and staff.

4.         The Presbytery notes the excellent work done by Chris Levison, the Training and Development Officer, whose post is funded by Scottish Executive Health Department (SEHD).

 

132.     STEWARDSHIP AND FINANCE

            The Presbytery called for the report of the Stewardship and Finance Committee which was given in by the Rev. James Hastie, Vice- Convener.

 

            It was moved, seconded and agreed.

 

1.         The Presbytery receives the report.

2.         The Presbytery notes that the Mission Renewal Fund Allocations for Wishaw: South Wishaw and Wishaw: Old linked with Craigneuk and Belhaven for 2004 and 2005 will be set by the General Assembly`s Board of Stewardship in conjunction with the Presbytery`s Committee, as appropriate.

3.         The Presbytery approves the Mission and Renewal Fund Allocations for 2005.

4.         The Presbytery agrees that voluntary additional stipend payments may be made in 2005 by Airdrie: New Wellwynd (10%), Bothwell (15%), Chapelton lw Strathaven: Rankin (6.5%), East Kilbride: Old (5%), East Kilbride: South (10%), Hamilton: Cadzow (10%), Hamilton: Old (10%), Hamilton: St. John`s (15%), Motherwell: Dalziel St. Andrew`s (10%), Motherwell: South Dalziel (3%), Strathaven: Avendale Old (15%), Wishaw: Cambusnethan North (5%) and Uddingston: Old (10%).

 

133.     ADJOURNMENT

There being no further business the Presbytery adjourned at  7.33p.m. to meet in hunc effectum within Uddingston: Burnhead Parish Church on Wednesday, 10th November, 2004 at 6.45 pm for 7.00 pm for the Introduction of Karen Hamilton as a Deacon: and for Ordinary Business within Motherwell: Dalziel St. Andrew`s Parish Church Halls on Tuesday, 7th December, 2004 at 7.00 pm
